Die Kunst der Flöte − Recorder concerts and more with Swiss Virtuoso Maurice Steger
The recorder is arguably one of the best-known yet most versatile instruments of the Baroque era and when Maurice Steger picks up his instruments, a seemingly familiar sound transforms into a fireworks display of impressive virtuosity, charming wit, and pure musical imagination. The Swiss musician is one of the outstanding recorder players of our time and is renowned worldwide for his electrifying interpretations of Early Music.
Together with the Bremer Barockorchester, he presents the rich sounds of the Italian and German Baroque in Bremen. Antonio Vivaldi— one of the era’s great masters— takes center stage; his music is brimming with rhythmic energy and brilliant soloistic ideas; music that instantly captivates the ear. His works are joined by other musical discoveries, such as works by J. A. Hasse, which bring out the full, colorful splendor of the period.
The detailed program will be announced shortly.
“Maurice Steger’s virtuosity and sense of style are admirable.”
It is hardly surprising, then, that he has been dubbed the “Paganini,” a “wizard,” “the world’s leading recorder player,” or an “electrifying and inspiring conductor.” Living up to such high expectations requires not only Steger’s astonishing technique but also charisma, intellect, and a very special sensitivity to the music. Maurice Steger demonstrates all of this to his audience, captivating them—whether playing or conducting—with his intense tone and boundless energy in a wide variety of concert formats across the globe. He appears regularly—as a soloist, conductor, or in a dual role—with leading period-instrument ensembles such as the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, La Cetra Barockorchester Basel, the Venice Baroque Orchestra, The English Concert, Il Pomo d’oro, and I Barocchisti, as well as with modern orchestras including the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Les Violons du Roy (Canada), the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the NDR Radiophilharmonie, and the Musikkollegium Winterthur. It is consistently remarkable how, following a period of working with him, all these ensembles sound transformed—tonally sensitive and distinctive, yet always historically informed and brimming with expressive vitality in the here and now.
