In the fall, the Bremen Baroque Orchestra once again visited the Käthe Kollwitz School in Delmenhorst with its music education project “Curtain Up: extraCLASS!” – but this time with a new focus: jointly developing a story to accompany the music. Under the continuous guidance of music educator Alexandra Schlappa, the third-grade children embarked on a musical journey of discovery over several weeks, in which Baroque works by Pachelbel, Bach, Vivaldi, and Telemann became the starting point for an imaginative fairy tale. The personal encounter with the orchestra’s musicians created a close connection to the music right from the start. Inspired by the sounds, the children invented their own story, developed scenes, characters, and moods, and translated the music into scenic images with great creativity.
At the final concert on October 10, this narrative was combined with live music performed by the Bremen Baroque Orchestra to create an impressive overall experience of language, theater, and sound. In front of the assembled school community, parents, and teachers, the children confidently demonstrated how lively and malleable classical music can be. The loud applause confirmed how effective this new narrative approach of “Curtain up: extraCLASS!” is and how it inspires lasting enthusiasm for music. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the EWE Foundation and the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation for making this special project possible.
