Education

The world of baroque music has all sorts of fantastic treasures waiting to be discovered by curious ears! Be it the delicate sounds of a theorbo, the rustling chords of a harpsichord, or the radiant tone of a baroque violin – the interpretations of the Bremen Baroque Orchestra sparkle with enthusiasm and immediately captivate the audience. The music can delight, comfort, influence you to dream, or simply exhilarating, especially when explored behind the scenes of the performances.

The orchestra’s education program, launched in 2020, offers various programs that create access to the world of music and open the possibility of creative exchange. The BBO team, some of whose members found their way to music through educational programs as a child, would like to share their fascination and passion for music in addition to their professional knowledge. Their objective is to make music accessible, create musical experiences, and impart knowledge that will integrate music into the everyday life of children and young people.

The programs enable personal insights into the rehearsals as well as an intensive examination of the compositions themselves. There is even the possibility of making music with professional musicians on stage, depending on the workshop.

Long-term cooperation between educational institutions and the orchestra also offers a unique opportunity for students and musicians to guide each other on their musical paths.

The main distinguishing features of the programs are that children and young people are artistically involved. They get the chance to experiment with music, and even surpass themselves! Depending on the project, students listen, sing, make music, compose, discuss or combine the music with other art forms such as dance and speech.

The offer changes and is constantly being expanded. Both individual events and long-term collaborations are possible.

Of course, we are also open to your aspirations and ideas! Please do not hesitate to contact us.

An imaginative dance with colourful scarves to a delicate “Branle”, a prelude on flutes that sounds like birdsong before a “Rosignolo” or rhythms played on percussion instruments that can keep up with the orchestra’s “Gavotte” – all of this could be heard in the brilliant final concert on 13 October 2023 at the Käthe Kollwitz School in Delmenhorst. As part of the “Curtain up: extraCLASS!!” project, the Year 4 pupils first got to know the orchestra during a rehearsal visit to Bremen and then spent weeks rehearsing their own pieces for the joint concert. Thunderous applause and an encore with all the pupils involved in the project brought this project to a festive conclusion!

Standing on stage with the Bremen Baroque Orchestra and performing a concert together – this became a reality for the pupils in years 3 and 4 of the primary school on Kantstraße on 11 November 2022. In the month-long project “Curtain up: extraCLASS!”, the children first got to know the musicians during a rehearsal visit, including preparation and follow-up work, before embarking on a week-long rehearsal phase themselves. Each class rehearsed an expressive dance, scenic body percussion, instrumental performance or a song based on poems they had written themselves to present all of this in an impressive concert in front of the whole school. In addition to familiarising students with the music and the orchestra, this project impressively succeeded in offering them a space for their own artistic creation.

What does our environment sound like today? This is what the students of the music performance course at Kippenberg Gymnasium Bremen 2022 explored in the project “Elemental Sounds & Soundscapes in Music and Nature”. Jean Féry Rébel set the four elements fire, water, air and earth to music in his composition “Les Éléments” in 1738, but these have changed since then, as have our perception and our musical style. In cooperation with BUND and sound artist Riccardo Castagnola, the young people developed their own contemporary sound language and composed their own representations of nature. These were finally presented to several hundred pupils from Bremen in a large final concert as part of a complete work of art entitled “Les Éléments”.

“I love how cool your orchestra is!” said a Year 3 pupil from the primary school on Kantstraße, who took part in the project “Music everywhere – experiencing a baroque orchestra up close” from 2020 to 2021. In the project, musicians visited the children at their school to introduce the bassoon, violin, viola, cello, lute, guitar, recorder, transverse flute and harpsichord in unique and varied lessons. Through music puzzles, song riddles, baroque dance and more, the pupils were always actively involved and had a lot of fun! For the big rehearsal visit, all the children got together in small “expedition teams” to explore one instrument in particular. At the end of the project, the young experts presented interesting, surprising and funny results to their classmates.
