Telemann goes East − An imaginary journey through Eastern Europe
The Baroque era was a time of musical curiosity. Composers listened to the sounds of distant lands, drew inspiration from their dances and rhythms, and blended what they heard with their own musical language. This is strikingly illustrated by the Hamburg composer Georg Philipp Telemann, who was deeply inspired by local folk music during his time in Poland. In his works, he combines the elegance of Baroque orchestral music with the rhythmic vitality of Polish folklore.
The Bremer Barockorchester traces further paths within this remarkably diverse European musical culture through works by various composers that incorporate Eastern European musical traditions into their compositions. A different musical world, however, is revealed in Fux’s Turcaria and Schmelzer’s Türkenschlacht bei Wien (Battle of Vienna): through distinctive musical motifs, the music conjures up a martial image of the Orient, demonstrating the profound impact of contemporary political events on European composers.
